About Our School

Dear Parents

I am delighted to be able to welcome you to our school. Thank you for your interest, whether you have children here already or your daughter or son will be starting at Fairlands Middle School soon.

Our main aim is for the children to be able to learn to their full potential. We will help them to grow as young people, well prepared for the next stages in their learning and able to thrive in our complex and challenging society. In order for the children to be able to learn we set out to provide an environment in which pupils feel secure and are able to develop their own self-esteem. We emphasise respect for others and a sense of personal responsibility within the community. The wider perspective of pupils’ learning is central to our school aims and sits alongside helping the children achieve the highest possible standards across the curriculum.

We are delighted that OFSTED visited us in 2012 and agreed with our own judgements. It was pleasing that the local paper, the Cheddar Valley Gazette, reported the inspection judgements in the following way; ‘The sparkling OFSTED report showers praise on a school that has many strengths, high standards and good achievement’.

For those of you new to the area, the educational system in the Cheddar Valley comprises of nine First Schools (ages 4 to 9), two Middle Schools (ages 9 to 13) and The Kings of Wessex Academy (ages 13 to 18). We are very pleased to be a part of this family of schools. We have a particularly strong partnership with Axbridge First School Academy, Cheddar First School, Shipham CE VC First School and Draycott and Rodney Stoke CE VA First School as partner schools where pupils transfer to Fairlands into Year 5. The vast majority of our pupils transfer to The Kings of Wessex Academy into Year 9.

The Governance of our school changed in 2014. Along with Cheddar First School and the First Schools in Shipham and Draycott a new Federation was formed - The Mendip Edge Federation. We now have a single Governing Body working across all four schools.

Somerset LA is the admission authority for our school and places will be allocated in accordance with their published arrangements. Copies of these arrangements can be obtained by calling Somerset Direct on 0845 3459122.

We regard it as essential to develop a partnership between home and school. At Fairlands Middle School we welcome parental involvement in your child’s education. Indeed parents strongly support us in our educational, social and fund-raising activities. Similarly, we are greatly indebted to the local community, private individuals, local associations and members of the business and commercial sector.

I hope this website will give you some useful and interesting information about our school and will answer many of your questions. If you want to know more please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely

Peter Elmy
